It also protects the desk surface, offers a uniform area for the mouse and slightly dampens typing noise. It's the cheapest aesthetic upgrade for a desk.
To cover keyboard and mouse with margin, look for around 90x40 cm. If you have a full-size keyboard or want more room to move the mouse at low DPI, go for XXL sizes (100x50 cm). Measure your desk first: it should fit without curling at the edges.
Cloth mats with a rubber base are the most popular: comfortable, quiet and with good mouse glide. Hard ones (synthetic leather or plastic) are easier to clean and give faster glide, but less cushioning. For most people, cloth with a non-slip base is the best option.
