Alternating between sitting and standing reduces back pain and keeps your energy up through the day. But not all standing desks are equal: the difference is in the motor, the stability and the height range.
Motor: dual electric motor, no question
- ✓Crank: cheap, but adjusting the height is so inconvenient you'll stop doing it. Avoid it.
- ✓Single electric motor: goes up and down, but slower and with less capacity.
- ✓Dual electric motor: the recommended option. Rises fast, holds more weight and is more stable.
Also look for height memory presets (buttons to save your sitting and standing positions): it's the difference between switching posture with one tap or never doing it.
Height range: check your measurements
- ✓Minimum height: if you're short, many desks don't go low enough to sit with elbows at 90°.
- ✓Maximum height: if you're tall (over 1.85 m), confirm it rises enough to stand comfortably.
A good range runs roughly from 60 to 125 cm. Outside that, measure before buying.
Stability: the factor you feel while typing
A desk that wobbles at standing height ruins the experience:
- ✓Leg structure: three-segment legs rise higher and are more stable than two-segment ones.
- ✓Load capacity: look for at least 70-100 kg to hold monitors and accessories without vibrating.
The surface (top)
Many desks are sold as just the frame, with the top separate. That way you choose size and finish. For dual monitors, look for 140-160 cm wide and at least 70 cm deep.
Our recommendation for your case
- ✓Most setups: a dual-motor electric frame with presets, and the top size you need.
- ✓Tight space: a narrower version, but don't drop below dual motor if you want it to last.
- ✓Tight budget: rather than a crank, save a bit more for the electric motor.
A height-adjustable desk is a long-term investment in your health. Prioritize motor and stability over extras.
