The difference between a laptop's built-in microphone and a dedicated USB mic is immediately obvious to your listeners: you go from sounding distant and tinny to sounding present and professional.

Condenser or dynamic

  • Condenser: very sensitive and detailed. Captures your voice with nuance... and the room noise too. Ideal if you have a quiet space.
  • Dynamic: picks up less ambience and forgives noisy or echoey rooms. The safest option if your environment isn't perfect.

Rule of thumb: if your room has echo or background noise, a well-placed dynamic will beat the most expensive condenser used badly.

Polar pattern: cardioid for speaking

  • Cardioid: picks up from the front and rejects the sides and back. It's what you want for voice.
  • Omnidirectional / bidirectional: for recording multiple sources or interviews. Unnecessary for solo meetings.

USB versus XLR

  • USB: plugs straight into the computer, no mixer. Plug and play.
  • XLR: professional quality, but needs an audio interface. Only if you're serious about production.

For 95% of cases, a good cardioid USB mic is more than enough.

Placement: the most common mistake

The mic should be 15-25 cm from your mouth, slightly below or beside your mouth line and pointing at you, never straight on (it captures plosive "p" and "b" sounds harshly). A pop filter removes the air bursts: cheap and very effective.

Our recommendation for your case

  • Start with quality and versatility: a classic USB condenser with several patterns.
  • Compact and clean for the desk: a narrow-pickup USB with pro sound in little space.
  • If your room is noisy: prioritize a narrow cardioid pattern and get close to the mic rather than raising the gain.

In short: cardioid, USB and good placement. The gear matters, but distance and angle matter more.
